Bronze Art
“Innocence (Foal and Girl) – the first life-size work in my equine collection – is a two-sculpture bronze capturing beauty, innocence, and the love between a one-week-old foal and a young girl. The foal and the child embody purity of spirit and the promise of the future. Like my other sculptures, Innocence explores an aspect of love and spirit – this time representing the special connection between human being and animal. My most challenging to date, this two-sculpture work is of the highest quality, showing much detail, expression and emotion.”
"Pure Heart is the driving force that moves the thoroughbred to victory. It is the heart of the racehorse, evident in all of the great ones - past, present and future.”
Sausalito, California - October 31, 2002 The California law enforcement dog was given major recognition on October 6, 2002, when Faithful Partner, a life-sized bronze German Shepherd police dog atop a seven-pointed granite sheriff’s star, was unveiled and dedicated at UC Davis in Sacramento, California to memorialize the state’s fallen canine heroes...Read More.
“The Faithful Partner head study, taken from the actual life-size bronze, captures the loyalty, alertness and intelligence of the German Shepherd breed.”
"Emerging Spirit portrays an Arabian horse, powerful in body and spirit, emerging from the earth to transcend the elements and boldly claim its destiny and independence.”

"I love to use animals to express emotion and beauty. In form and essence, animals add a purity to the artistic statement."
“It was rewarding to try to capture the nobility and intelligence, as well as the alert, composed character of this beautiful breed.”
“My lion head study, Majestic Pride, captures the essence of this great animal of the wild. In regal stillness he guards his mate and cubs, alert to any sound or scent of danger or prey in the miles of deep grasses surrounding them. In the acrylic version, I created an illusion whereby, when the piece is viewed from the back, the lion appears to come to life and follow the movement of the viewer. This effect highlights the lion’s mystical, hypnotic power.”

Patron Karol O’Connell commissioned Susan Bahary to create this life-size bronze sculpture of O’Connell’s famous champion, King, a Shetland sheep dog. King (Champion Dark Lagoon O’Page’s Hill) belongs to the American Shetland Sheep Dog Century Club for winning 100 or more “Best of Breed” awards. King’s retirement party at a posh Manhattan hotel was pictured in the New York Times. King was known for his angelic personality. Says O’Connell, “He was a dog of a lifetime”.

"This is a life-size head study taken from the full-body Sheltie Champion King.

“Arabian Heart (Mare and Stallion) expresses the love between the mare and the stallion as they embrace one another, the arc of their necks and heads forming an abstract heart. Each horse contains its own nature – the strength of the stallion and the serenity of the mare. This sculpture is available either as the pair or as the individual mare or stallion. Arabian Heart was inspired by the beauty of the mare and the stallion: It is about love in the larger sense of the word – Arabians are the vehicle.”

"Showtime, a sculpture of two Standard Poodles, utilizes the bas relief method of sculpting. In this piece my intent was to capture the difference in look and personality of two elegant show dogs.”

“Innocence (Foal) is the first life-size work in my equine collection, embodying purity of spirit and the promise of the future. In Innocence (Foal and Girl), a two-sculpture pairing, the foal together with a life-size sculpture of a young girl captures beauty, innocence, and the love between two young beings – one animal, one human. My most challenging to date, these two bronzes are of the highest quality, showing much detail, expression and emotion.”

Bronze sculptures have weathered centuries in the out-of-doors. “In this installation, the foal appears to pause before stepping into a meadow, attentive to the sound of rustling tree leaves around her. In my sculptures I attempt to capture the essence of my subject in a moment of heightened alertness.”
Innocence (Foal), can also be combined with a water feature, whether indoors or outdoors, to magical effect.

"Soaring Spirit captures a Hunter/Jumper reaching toward the highest point pf its jump. Expressing the graceful motion and keen focus these powerful horses, bred for their athleticism and jumping abilities, the work conveys the Hunter/Jumper’s tremendous attention to task as it navigates the jumping course.”
