Susan Bahary is one of the leading artists working in fine art acrylic, a new medium for sculpture casting used only since 1982. In sunlight or in special art lighting, fine art acrylic gives off an ethereal “fourth-dimensional” glow. Bahary uses the light-play and image-within-an-image capabilities of this medium to beautiful effect. In From the Heart (Foal), and in the acrylic version of Two Terriers, she sculpted the images to seemingly follow the viewer walking past.
Bahary’s acrylic-only works are: From the Heart (Mare and Foal), From the Heart (Foal), Affinity, and the Classic Maltese.
Bahary makes some sculptures available in both acrylic and bronze, allowing for individual preference either for the other-worldly translucence of fine art acrylic or for the power of classic bronze. She customizes lighting as requested for both...Read more.
Bronze, the classic art medium of the ancients, is used for all of Susan Bahary’s commissioned public monuments – for durability outdoors and for realism of their patinas (special colors etched onto the surface of the bronze).
Bahary’s Always Faithful, the first United States monument to the heroic World War II war dog, is a life-size bronze Doberman Pinscher that was featured on CNN at its unveiling at the Pentagon, and continues to be covered by major media outlets. The original sculpture, installed at the Marine War Dog Cemetery on Guam, was the first of four major monument installations of Always Faithful across the United States. Another bronze monument, Faithful Partner, is a life-size German Shepherd that memorializes the California law enforcement canine (K-9). The work guards the entrance of the veterinary school at the University of California at Davis. Bahary’s most recent canine monument sculpture, Smoky and Dogs of All Wars, is a whimsical bronze Yorkshire Terrier in a soldier’s helmet, a tribute to a female Yorkie (and to all military dogs throughout history) who was not only a canine hero, but also the first documented therapy dog and a TV performer. Smoky and Dogs of All Wars was dedicated and installed on Veteran’s Day 2005 at Cleveland Metroparks in Lakewood, Ohio.
The three monument sculptures and Innocence (Foal and Girl), Bahary’s two-sculpture life-size work portraying a foal and a young girl, are available in bronze only.
Bronze is equally suited for indoor and outdoor placements. One installation of Innocence (Foal) – the foal by itself – is in a particularly lovely outdoor setting at Spring Down Equestrian Center, Portola Valley, California.
Bronze sculptures are breathtaking when combined with water features such as fountains. Bahary provides customized water features, unique patinas, and special lighting installations, as requested.
